Anthropic is hiring a Technical Program Manager to bridge the gap between researchers advancing Claude's scientific capabilities and the external scientific community. You'll be embedded with the Discovery team, conceptualizing and running programs that get Claude into scientists' hands while shaping the Anthropic Science Blog.
This is a technical role requiring research taste and firsthand understanding of academia. You'll work across Communications, Editorial, Beneficial Deployments, and external partners including universities, funders, and scientific societies.
Key responsibilities include:
- Acting as the interface between internal research teams and external researchers, translating rapid capability improvements into practical use by scientists
- Setting Anthropic's external science strategy by recommending focus areas, communities, and how programs and communications align
- Guiding the scientific direction of the Anthropic Science Blog, working with researchers and editorial teams to identify stories, draft and edit posts, and maintain publication cadence
- Designing, launching, and running external science programs including grants, access programs (AI for Science grants, Team plan offerings), and partnerships with scientific foundations
- Gathering feedback from scientific communities on Claude usage patterns, capability gaps, and translating insights into recommendations for research and product teams
You'll have significant autonomy: once aligned with Discovery leadership on strategy, you'll drive decisions on funding, publishing, and academic engagement.
Minimum qualifications:
- PhD in a scientific or mathematical field with a track record of original research
- Demonstrated writing ability for both scientific domain and general-interest audiences, with understanding of how modern AI models are trained
- Experience with the grants process (applying for, managing competitive funding, and ideally designing, reviewing, or administering funding programs)
- Deep engagement with frontier AI: you use these tools in your own work, understand their strengths and limitations, and recognize AI's potential to transform scientific processes
- Track record of driving multi-stakeholder projects to completion and coordinating people juggling high-priority work; resourceful, high-agency, able to navigate ambiguity
- Credibility with researchers as a peer; understanding of academic communities, their incentives, norms, and sensitivities
- Fast learner who builds deep contextual understanding in unfamiliar scientific domains and contributes meaningfully to discussions outside your field
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience as a program officer, program director, or fellowship lead at a science funder, research agency, or philanthropy
- Published science writing in outlets such as Quanta, Scientific American, or Physics Today, or substantial public writing presence (blog, newsletter)
- Research experience using AI/ML methods or involving scientific software, tools, or datasets
- Experience building partnerships with scientific societies, journals, or research institutions
- Familiarity with AI safety and responsible deployment, including dual-use considerations in fields like biology
- Experience organizing conferences, workshops, or large coordinated launches
