Speechify is a text-to-speech platform used by over 50 million people to convert PDFs, books, Google Docs, news articles, and websites into audio. You will lead the Android Core Product team as a hands-on manager who continues to write and review code while guiding team direction and process. This is not a pure management role—you'll own major features end-to-end, from design decisions through release, while also improving team reliability metrics, unblocking teammates, and consolidating duplicated work across the codebase.
Key responsibilities include:
- Owning major features end-to-end with close collaboration with design and product teams
- Maintaining and improving reliability metrics for key features
- Providing code review feedback that helps engineers learn and grow
- Unblocking team members stuck on problems and identifying systemic issues
- Consolidating shared code and reducing technical debt when multiple versions of the same solution emerge
- Improving release processes and reducing manual intervention in builds
- Running planning sessions focused on decisions rather than execution clarity
- Mentoring early-career engineers with appropriate learning opportunities
- Participating in cross-functional discussions with Product and Design, bringing engineering constraints early
- Handling critical issues and providing nightly builds for QA
Speechy operates as a 100% distributed, flat organization with ~200 employees globally, including engineers from Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and founders of successful startups. The company has won Chrome Extension of the Year (Google) and Design Award for Inclusivity (Apple, 2025).
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of software engineering experience, including time leading a team or owning a major surface while staying hands-on
- Rock-solid expertise in Kotlin, Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Music Player Service, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, and JUnit tests
- Experience shipping and maintaining background audio or other long-running background work
- Strong understanding of testing approaches, including what can and cannot be covered by automated tests
- Demonstrated ability to introduce practices or tools to a team that stuck after you stopped pushing them
- Comfort with the difficult aspects of leadership: asking people to change how they work and managing the friction that follows
- Clear perspective on which changes require heavy review versus lighter review, grounded in system behavior
- Track record of building tools and systems that the broader team actually adopted and used
- Ability to describe how your team works with AI agents, not just personal experience
- Product design intuition, user empathy, and drive to push Android UI/UX beyond specifications
- Self-driven approach to improving the app and codebase beyond outlined requirements
- Excellent communication skills
BONUS:
- Open source Android project experience
- iOS, Web, or NodeJS experience
