Speechify is a text-to-speech platform used by over 50 million people to convert PDFs, books, Google Docs, news articles, and websites into audio. The company's Android app is the most-used text-to-speech app in the Play Store, and user growth has outpaced the team's development velocity.
You will lead the Android core product team as a hands-on manager who continues to write and review code while guiding team direction and execution. This is not a pure management role—you'll own major features end-to-end, from design decisions through release, while also handling the leadership work that doesn't happen automatically: eliminating duplicate solutions, standardizing approaches, unblocking teammates, and improving team processes.
Key responsibilities include:
- Own and ship major features end-to-end, working closely with design and product teams
- Maintain and improve reliability metrics for key features
- Provide high-quality code reviews that teach, not just approve
- Unblock teammates stuck on problems; notice systemic issues and fix them
- Consolidate duplicate implementations and establish shared patterns
- Improve release processes and reduce manual intervention
- Shift verification left by growing automated testing coverage
- Run planning focused on decisions rather than execution clarity
- Participate in cross-functional discussions and bring engineering constraints early
- Handle critical issues and provide nightly builds for QA
- Mentor early-career engineers with learning-focused work assignments
- Lead process improvements and handle the friction that comes with change

- Proven experience shipping and maintaining background audio or other long-running background work
- Deep understanding of testing philosophy and practice, including what tests cannot cover
- Demonstrated ability to introduce a practice or tool to a team that stuck after you stopped pushing it
- Comfort with the difficult aspects of leadership: asking people to change how they work and managing the resulting friction
- Ability to reason about which changes require heavy review and which don't, based on system behavior
- Track record of building tools and patterns that the team actually adopted, not just personal productivity gains
- Ability to describe how your team works with AI agents, not only personal AI usage
