Speechify is a text-to-speech platform used by over 50 million people to convert PDFs, books, Google Docs, news articles, and websites into audio. The company's Android app is the most-used text-to-speech app in the Play Store, and user growth has outpaced the team's development velocity.
You will lead the Android Core Product team as a hands-on manager who continues to write and review code while elevating team execution. This is not a pure management role—you'll own major features end-to-end, from design decisions through release, while also driving systemic improvements in how the team works.
Key responsibilities include:
- Own and ship major features end-to-end, working closely with design and product teams
- Maintain and improve reliability metrics for key features
- Provide code review that teaches and elevates team standards
- Unblock teammates by identifying blockers and helping resolve them
- Consolidate duplicated work and establish shared patterns the team adopts
- Improve release processes and reduce manual intervention in builds
- Run planning sessions focused on decisions rather than execution details
- Mentor early-career engineers and create learning opportunities
- Participate in cross-functional discussions (Product, Design, Engineering) and advocate for technical constraints
- Handle critical issues and provide nightly builds for QA
- Drive process improvements: when the same problem appears twice, fix the underlying setup so it doesn't happen a third time
- Shift verification left by expanding automated testing and checks
Speechy is a 100% distributed company with ~200 employees globally, including engineers from Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Stanford. The culture values flat hierarchy, technical excellence, and fast execution.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of software engineering experience, including time leading a team or owning a major surface while staying hands-on
- Expert-level Kotlin, Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Music Player Service, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, and JUnit
- Experience shipping and maintaining background audio or other long-running background work
- Understanding of testing philosophy and practice, including what cannot be covered by automated tests
- Demonstrated ability to introduce a practice or tool to a team that stuck after you stopped pushing it
- Comfort with the difficult parts of leadership: asking people to change how they work and managing the friction that follows
- Ability to argue which changes need heavy review based on system behavior and risk
- Track record of building tools and systems that the broader team actually adopted
- Ability to describe how your team works with AI agents, not just personal experience
- Product design intuition, user empathy, and drive to push Android UI/UX beyond specifications
- Self-drive to improve the app and codebase beyond outlined specs
- Excellent communication skills
BONUS:
- Open source Android contributions
- Experience with iOS, Web, or NodeJS
