You will lead the Android Core Product team as a hands-on technical manager. This is explicitly not a role where you stop coding—you'll continue writing and reviewing code while also owning the team's technical direction and processes. Your responsibilities include:
• Own major features end-to-end from decision through release, working closely with design
• Maintain and improve reliability metrics for key features
• Provide code review feedback that helps engineers learn and grow
• Unblock team members stuck on problems; notice when someone needs help
• Consolidate duplicated work and establish shared patterns the team uses
• Improve release processes and reduce manual intervention in builds
• Shift verification left by growing automated testing and checks
• Run planning sessions focused on decisions rather than already-clear work
• Participate in cross-functional discussions with Product and Design, bringing engineering constraints early
• Handle critical issues and provide nightly builds for QA
• Mentor early-career engineers and ensure they have learning opportunities
• Drive process improvements and call out when the team needs to change how it works
The role emphasizes that you'll spend roughly equal time coding and leading. You'll be responsible for noticing systemic problems (when the same issue appears twice, fix the root cause so it doesn't happen a third time), standardizing approaches, and helping the team work more effectively without micromanagement.
REQUIREMENTS:
• 5+ years of software engineering experience, including time leading a team or owning a major surface while staying hands-on
• Strong expertise in Kotlin, Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Music Player Service, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, and JUnit tests
• Experience shipping and maintaining background audio or other long-running background work
• Understanding of testing importance and how to write tests effectively, including awareness of what cannot be tested
• Demonstrated ability to introduce a practice or tool to a team that stuck after you stopped pushing it
• Comfort with the unpopular aspects of leadership: asking people to change how they work and managing the friction that follows
• Clear perspective on which code changes need heavy review versus lighter review, grounded in system behavior
• Track record of building tools and systems that your team actually adopted and used
• Ability to describe how your team works with AI agents, not just personal AI usage
• Product design intuition, user empathy, and drive to push Android UI/UX beyond specifications
• Self-drive to improve the app and codebase beyond outlined specs
• Excellent communication skills
BONUS: Open source Android contributions, iOS/Web/NodeJS experience.
