Speechify is a text-to-speech platform used by over 50 million people to convert PDFs, books, Google Docs, news articles, and websites into audio. The company's Android app is the most-used text-to-speech app in the Google Play Store, and user growth has outpaced the team's development velocity.
You will lead the Android Core Product team as a hands-on manager who continues to write and review code while elevating team execution. This is not a pure management role—you'll own major features end-to-end, from design decisions through release, while also driving systemic improvements in how the team works.
Key responsibilities include:
- Own and ship major features working closely with design and product teams
- Maintain and improve reliability metrics for key features
- Provide high-quality code reviews that help engineers learn and grow
- Unblock teammates stuck on problems; notice when duplicate solutions exist and consolidate them
- Keep shared infrastructure tested, clear, and maintainable
- Reduce manual work in the release process and shift verification left through automation
- Run planning sessions focused on decisions rather than execution details
- Participate in cross-functional discussions (Product, Design, Engineering) and advocate for technical constraints early
- Handle critical issues and provide nightly builds for QA
- Mentor junior engineers, ensuring they get learning opportunities and time to develop
- Drive process improvements when the team is ready to change how it works
Speechy operates as a flat, 100% distributed organization with ~200 employees globally, including engineers from Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and founders of successful startups. The company has received recognition from Google (Chrome Extension of the Year) and Apple (Design award for inclusivity, 2025).
Requirements:
- 5+ years of software engineering experience, including time leading a team or owning a major surface while staying hands-on
- Expert-level Kotlin skills: Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Music Player Service, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, JUnit tests
- Proven experience shipping and maintaining background audio or other long-running background work
- Strong understanding of testing philosophy—what can and cannot be covered by automated tests
- Track record of introducing practices or tools to a team that persisted after you stopped advocating for them, with honest reflection on the adoption cost
- Comfort with the difficult parts of leadership: asking people to change how they work and managing the friction that follows
- Ability to reason about which code changes need heavy review versus light review based on system behavior
- Demonstrated success building tools and systems that your team actually adopted and used
- Ability to describe how your team works with AI agents, not just personal AI usage
- Product design intuition, user empathy, and drive to push Android UI/UX beyond specifications
- Self-motivation to improve the app and codebase beyond what's outlined in specs
- Excellent communication skills
Bonus:
- Open source Android project contributions
- Experience with iOS, Web, or Node.js
