You will lead the Android Core Product team as a hands-on technical leader. This is explicitly not a management-only role: you will write code, review code, and own features yourself. The leadership component focuses on team coordination, architectural decisions, and process improvement—ensuring the team avoids duplicated work, maintains shared infrastructure, and focuses effort on decisions that actually need to be made.
Key responsibilities include:
- Own major features end-to-end from conception through release, working closely with design and product
- Maintain and improve reliability metrics for critical features
- Provide code review that teaches, not just approves
- Unblock teammates stuck on problems; identify and consolidate duplicate solutions
- Improve release processes and reduce manual intervention in builds
- Shift verification left by expanding automated testing coverage
- Run planning sessions focused on high-impact decisions
- Participate in cross-functional discussions (Product, Design, Engineering) and advocate for team constraints early
- Handle critical issues and provide nightly builds to QA
- Mentor junior engineers and ensure they have learning opportunities
- Drive process improvements when the team's workflow needs to change
The role emphasizes technical depth, product intuition, and the ability to push Android UI/UX beyond specifications. You'll work in a flat organization where leadership is earned through technical excellence and consistent delivery.
Requirements:
- 5+ years of software engineering experience, including time leading a team or owning a major surface while remaining hands-on
- Strong expertise in Kotlin, Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Music Player Service, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, and JUnit tests
- Proven experience shipping and maintaining background audio or other long-running background work
- Deep understanding of testing approaches, including what can and cannot be covered by automated tests
- Track record of introducing practices or tools to a team that persisted after you stopped actively promoting them
- Comfort with organizational friction: ability to ask people to change how they work and navigate the resistance that follows
- Principled views on code review requirements based on system behavior and risk
- History of building tools and systems that the broader team actually adopted and used
- Ability to describe how your team works with AI agents, not just personal experience
- Product design intuition, user empathy, and drive to improve Android UX beyond specifications
- Self-motivation to improve the app and codebase beyond outlined requirements
- Excellent communication skills
Bonus:
- Open source Android contributions or maintenance
- Experience with iOS, Web, or NodeJS
