You will lead the Android Core Product team as a hands-on technical leader. This is explicitly not a pure management role—you will continue writing and reviewing code, owning features end-to-end, and shipping releases. The leadership portion focuses on team coordination, process improvement, and unblocking work rather than people management in the traditional sense.
Key responsibilities include:
- Own major features end-to-end from decision through release, working closely with design
- Maintain and improve reliability metrics for key features
- Provide high-quality code reviews that help engineers learn
- Unblock teammates and consolidate duplicate solutions across the team
- Improve release processes and reduce manual intervention
- Run planning sessions focused on decisions rather than execution details
- Shift verification left by expanding automated testing and checks
- Participate in cross-functional discussions with Product and Design, bringing engineering constraints early
- Handle critical issues and provide nightly builds for QA
- Mentor early-career engineers and ensure they have learning opportunities
- Drive process improvements and team working agreements
The role emphasizes technical depth, product intuition, and the ability to influence team practices through example and persuasion rather than authority.
Requirements:
- 5+ years of software engineering experience, including time leading a team or owning a major surface while staying hands-on
- Expert-level Kotlin proficiency: Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Music Player Service, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, JUnit tests
- Proven experience shipping and maintaining background audio or other long-running background work
- Strong understanding of testing philosophy and practice, including what cannot be covered by automated tests
- Track record of introducing practices or tools to a team that persisted after you stopped advocating for them
- Comfort with the difficult parts of leadership: asking people to change how they work and managing the resulting friction
- Ability to reason about which changes require heavy review based on system behavior
- History of building tools and solutions that your team actually adopted and used
- Ability to describe how your team works with AI agents, not just personal experience
- Product design intuition, user empathy, and drive to push Android UI/UX beyond specifications
- Self-driven approach to improving the app and codebase
- Excellent communication skills
Bonus qualifications:
- Open source Android project contributions
- Experience with iOS, Web, or NodeJS
