Speechify is a text-to-speech platform used by over 50 million people to convert PDFs, books, Google Docs, articles, and websites into audio. The company's Android app is the most-used text-to-speech app in the Play Store. You'll join a 100% distributed team of ~200 people globally, including engineers from Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Stanford.
This is a hands-on Team Lead role for the Android Core Product team. You'll own major features end-to-end, from decision through release, while continuing to write and review code. The role balances individual contribution with team leadership: roughly half your impact comes from the code you write, and half from unblocking the team, standardizing shared components, improving processes, and developing junior engineers.
Key responsibilities include:
- Own and ship major features working closely with design and product teams
- Maintain and improve reliability metrics for key features
- Provide code review that teaches, not just approves
- Unblock teammates stuck on problems; consolidate duplicate solutions
- Improve release processes and reduce manual intervention
- Shift verification left by expanding automated testing
- Run planning focused on decisions rather than clear work
- Participate in cross-functional discussions and bring engineering constraints early
- Handle critical issues and nightly QA builds
- Mentor early-career engineers with learning-focused work
- Drive team process improvements and handle the friction that comes with change
The company emphasizes flat structure, technical excellence, work ethic, communication, and winning. You'll work in a distributed setting with no office.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of software engineering experience, including team leadership or owning a major surface while staying hands-on
- Strong Kotlin expertise: Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Music Player Service, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, JUnit tests
- Experience shipping and maintaining background audio or long-running background work
- Understanding of testing importance and approach, including limitations
- Track record of introducing practices to a team that stuck after you stopped pushing
- Comfort with the unpopular half of leadership: asking people to change how they work and managing resulting friction
- Ability to argue which changes need heavy review based on system behavior
- Track record of building tools your team actually used, not just personal productivity gains
- Ability to describe how your team works with AI agents
- Product design intuition, user empathy, and drive to push Android UI/UX beyond spec
- Self-drive to improve app and codebase beyond outlined spec
- Excellent communication skills
BONUS: Open source Android contributions, iOS/Web/NodeJS experience.
