Speechify is a text-to-speech platform used by over 50 million people to convert PDFs, books, Google Docs, articles, and websites into audio. The company has ~200 employees globally in a fully distributed setting, with team members from Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Stanford, and high-growth startups like Stripe and Vercel.
You will lead the Android team responsible for Speechify's most-used text-to-speech app in the Play Store. This is a hands-on role where you remain a significant individual contributor while also elevating team execution. You'll own major features end-to-end from decision through release, maintain reliability metrics, conduct meaningful code reviews, and unblock teammates. You'll consolidate duplicated work across the team, improve release processes, shift verification left through automation, and run planning focused on decisions rather than execution details. You'll also participate in cross-functional discussions with Product and Design, mentor early-career engineers, and drive improvements to the codebase and app beyond spec.
The role requires comfort with the harder parts of leadership: asking people to change how they work, managing the friction that follows, and making calls on process changes before they happen organically. You'll handle critical issues, own feature releases, and provide nightly builds for QA.
Speechy has won Chrome Extension of the Year (Google) and Design Award for Inclusivity (Apple, 2025). The company operates as a flat organization where leadership emerges through technical excellence and consistent delivery.
REQUIREMENTS:

- Experience shipping and maintaining background audio or other long-running background work
- Understanding of testing importance and approach, including what cannot be covered by tests
- Track record of introducing something to a team that stuck after you stopped pushing it, with honest account of the cost
- Comfort with the unpopular half of leadership: asking people to change how they work and living with resulting friction
- Informed view on which changes need heavy review versus light review, argued from system behavior
- Track record of building things your team actually used, not only things that made you faster
- Ability to describe how your team works with AI agents, not only how you do personally

- Self-drive to improve app and codebase beyond outlined spec
- Excellent communication skills
