Speechify is a text-to-speech platform used by over 50 million people to convert PDFs, books, Google Docs, articles, and websites into audio. The company's Android app is the most-used text-to-speech app in the Play Store. Speechify operates as a fully distributed, 100% remote company with ~200 employees globally, including engineers from Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Stanford. You will lead the Android Core Product team as a hands-on manager. This is explicitly not a pure management role—you will continue writing and reviewing code, owning features end-to-end, and shipping releases. The leadership component focuses on unblocking the team, consolidating duplicate solutions, improving processes, and ensuring the team's time goes to work that requires decisions rather than routine execution. Key responsibilities include: - Own major features end-to-end from decision through release, working closely with design - Maintain and improve reliability metrics for key features - Provide high-quality code reviews that help engineers learn - Unblock teammates stuck on problems; notice systemic issues and drive fixes - Identify when one person's solution should become the team standard - Keep shared code tested, clear, and consolidated - Lead team planning to focus on high-impact decisions - Reduce manual work in the release process and shift verification left - Handle critical issues and provide nightly builds for QA - Mentor early-career engineers with appropriate learning opportunities - Participate in cross-functional discussions with Product and Design, bringing engineering constraints early - Define review rigor by system risk, not by role The role emphasizes technical depth, product intuition, and the ability to drive process improvements while maintaining hands-on coding. You'll work in a flat organization where leadership is earned through technical excellence and consistent delivery. Requirements: - 5+ years of software engineering experience, including time leading a team or owning a major surface while staying hands-on - Expert-level Kotlin proficiency: Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Music Player Service, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, JUnit tests - Proven experience shipping and maintaining background audio or other long-running background work - Strong understanding of testing philosophy and practice, including awareness of testing limitations - Track record of introducing practices or tools to a team that persisted after you stopped championing them, with honest assessment of adoption costs - Comfort with the difficult aspects of leadership: asking teams to change processes and managing resulting friction - Ability to argue which changes need heavy review based on system behavior - History of building tools and systems that the team actually adopted and used - Ability to describe how your team works with AI agents, not just personal AI usage - Product design intuition, user empathy, and drive to push Android UI/UX beyond specifications - Self-motivation to improve the app and codebase beyond the spec - Excellent communication skills Bonus qualifications: - Open source Android project contributions - Experience with iOS, Web, or NodeJS
