Speechify is a text-to-speech platform used by over 50 million people to convert PDFs, books, articles, and web content into audio. The company operates as a fully distributed, 100% remote organization with ~200 employees globally, including engineers from Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Stanford.
You will lead the Android Core Product team, which owns the most-used text-to-speech app in the Google Play Store. This is explicitly a hands-on role where you remain a significant individual contributor while elevating team execution. You will own major features end-to-end, write and review code, maintain reliability metrics, and unblock teammates. Beyond coding, you'll standardize shared components across the team, improve release processes, shift testing left, run planning focused on decisions rather than execution, and mentor junior engineers.
Key responsibilities include:
- Owning major features from conception through release, working closely with design
- Maintaining and improving reliability metrics for key features
- Providing code review that teaches, not just approves
- Identifying when team members are stuck and providing hands-on help
- Consolidating duplicate solutions into team-wide standards
- Reducing manual work in the release pipeline
- Automating verification so QA confirms rather than discovers issues
- Running planning sessions that focus on decisions
- Defining review requirements based on system risk, not process
- Mentoring early-career engineers
- Participating in cross-functional discussions with Product and Design
- Handling critical issues and providing nightly builds to QA
The role requires comfort with the difficult parts of leadership: asking people to change how they work and managing the friction that follows. You'll work in a flat organization where leadership is earned through technical excellence and consistent delivery.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of software engineering experience, including team leadership or owning a major surface while staying hands-on
- Expert-level Kotlin, Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Music Player Service, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, and JUnit
- Proven experience shipping and maintaining background audio or other long-running background work
- Deep understanding of testing strategy: what to test, what can't be tested, and how to approach test design
- Track record of introducing practices to a team that persisted after you stopped advocating for them, with honest assessment of the adoption cost
- Comfort with the unpopular aspects of leadership: driving process change and managing resulting friction
- Ability to argue which changes need heavy review based on system behavior and risk
- History of building tools and patterns that the broader team actually adopted, not just personal productivity gains
- Ability to describe how your team works with AI agents, not only your personal approach
- Product design intuition, user empathy, and drive to push Android UI/UX beyond specifications
- Self-drive to improve the app and codebase beyond outlined scope
- Excellent communication skills
BONUS: Open source Android contributions, iOS/Web/NodeJS experience.
