Speechify is a text-to-speech platform used by over 50 million people to convert PDFs, books, Google Docs, news articles, and websites into audio. The company's Android app is the most-used text-to-speech app in the Play Store, and user growth has outpaced the team's development velocity. You will lead the Android core product team as a hands-on technical leader. This is explicitly not a management role where you stop coding—you will continue writing and reviewing code while also owning the team's technical direction and process. Your impact splits between direct engineering contributions (owning major features end-to-end, maintaining reliability metrics, providing code review) and team leadership (unblocking teammates, consolidating duplicate solutions, improving release processes, mentoring junior engineers, and driving process improvements). Key responsibilities include: - Own major features from decision through release, working closely with design - Maintain and improve reliability metrics for key features - Provide high-quality code review that helps engineers learn - Unblock teammates and identify when the team needs process changes - Consolidate shared code and eliminate duplicate implementations - Improve release automation and shift verification left through better testing - Run planning focused on decisions rather than execution clarity - Participate in cross-functional discussions with Product and Design - Handle critical issues and provide nightly builds for QA - Mentor early-career engineers and ensure they have learning opportunities Speechy is 100% distributed with ~200 employees globally, including engineers from Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and founders of successful startups. The company has won Chrome Extension of the Year (Google) and Design Award for Inclusivity (Apple). REQUIREMENTS: - 5+ years of software engineering experience, including team leadership or owning a major surface while staying hands-on - Expert-level Kotlin proficiency: Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Music Player Service, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, JUnit tests - Shipped and maintained background audio or long-running background work - Strong understanding of testing philosophy and practice - Track record of introducing practices to a team that stuck after you stopped pushing them - Comfort with the difficult parts of leadership: asking people to change how they work and managing the resulting friction - Ability to assess which changes need heavy review based on system impact - History of building tools and systems your team actually adopted - Ability to describe how your team works with AI agents - Product design intuition, user empathy, and drive to push Android UI/UX beyond spec - Self-drive to improve the app and codebase - Excellent communication skills BONUS: Open source Android contributions, iOS/Web/NodeJS experience.
