Speechify is a text-to-speech platform used by over 50 million people to convert PDFs, books, Google Docs, articles, and websites into audio. The company was named Chrome Extension of the Year by Google and received Apple's Design award for inclusivity in 2025. With ~200 employees globally in a fully distributed setting, Speechify operates without a physical office.
You will lead the Android Core Product team, which owns the most-used text-to-speech app in the Google Play Store. This is a hands-on technical leadership role where you remain a significant individual contributor while elevating team execution. The role balances direct coding and code review with team leadership responsibilities.
Key responsibilities include: owning major features end-to-end from conception through release; maintaining and improving reliability metrics for key features; providing substantive code review that develops team members; unblocking teammates stuck on problems; consolidating duplicate solutions across the team; maintaining shared infrastructure and testing practices; driving process improvements; reducing manual intervention in release processes; implementing automated verification to shift quality left; running planning focused on decisions rather than execution; determining appropriate review rigor by area; participating in cross-functional discussions with Product and Design; handling critical issues and nightly QA builds; and developing early-career engineers through thoughtful work assignment and mentorship.
The role requires comfort with the difficult aspects of leadership: asking teams to change established practices and managing the friction that follows. You'll work in a flat organization where leadership is earned through technical excellence and consistent delivery.
Requirements:
- 5+ years of software engineering experience, including time leading a team or owning a major surface while staying hands-on
- Strong expertise in Kotlin, Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Music Player Service, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, and JUnit tests
- Experience shipping and maintaining background audio or other long-running background work
- Understanding of testing importance and strategy, including limitations of automated testing
- Demonstrated ability to introduce practices or tools to a team that persisted after you stopped advocating for them, with honest assessment of adoption costs
- Comfort with the unpopular aspects of leadership: driving process change and managing resulting friction
- Principled perspective on which changes require heavy review versus lighter touch, grounded in system behavior
- Track record of building solutions that the broader team adopted, not just personal productivity tools
- Ability to describe how your team works with AI agents, not only personal AI usage
- Product design intuition, user empathy, and drive to push Android UI/UX beyond specifications
- Self-motivation to improve the app and codebase beyond outlined requirements
- Excellent communication skills
Bonus: open source Android contributions, iOS/Web/NodeJS experience.
