You will lead the Android Core Product team as a hands-on manager who continues to write and review code while elevating team execution. This is not a pure management role—you'll own major features end-to-end alongside your leadership responsibilities.
Key responsibilities include:
- Own and ship major features from decision through release, working closely with design
- Maintain and improve reliability metrics for key features
- Provide high-quality code reviews that help engineers learn
- Unblock team members stuck on problems; notice systemic issues and solve them
- Consolidate duplicated work and establish shared patterns the team uses
- Improve release processes and reduce manual intervention
- Shift verification left by growing automated testing coverage
- Run planning focused on decisions rather than clear-cut work
- Participate in cross-functional discussions with Product and Design, bringing engineering constraints early
- Handle critical issues and provide nightly builds for QA
- Develop early-career engineers by assigning learnable work and protecting time for growth
- Drive process improvements and lead team discussions on how the team should work
The role emphasizes that skepticism from engineers about processes is often valid and worth acting on. You'll balance hands-on technical contribution with the less popular aspects of leadership: asking people to change how they work and managing the friction that follows.
Requirements:
- 5+ years of software engineering experience, including time leading a team or owning a major surface while staying hands-on
- Strong expertise in Kotlin, Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Music Player Service, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, and JUnit tests
- Experience shipping and maintaining background audio or other long-running background work
- Deep understanding of testing: what to test, how to test it, and what can't be covered by tests
- Demonstrated ability to introduce a practice or tool to a team that stuck after you stopped pushing it, with honest reflection on the cost
- Comfort with the unpopular parts of leadership: asking teams to change how they work and living with the friction
- Clear reasoning about which changes need heavy review and which don't, grounded in system behavior
- Track record of building things your team actually used, not only things that made you faster
- Ability to describe how your team works with AI agents, not only how you work personally
- Product design intuition, user empathy, and drive to push Android UI/UX beyond spec
- Self-drive to improve the app and codebase beyond outlined specs
- Excellent communication skills
Bonus:
- Open source Android project contributions
- iOS, Web, or NodeJS experience
