Speechify is a text-to-speech platform used by over 50 million people to convert PDFs, books, Google Docs, news articles, and websites into audio. The company's Android app is the most-used text-to-speech app in the Play Store. Speechify operates as a 100% distributed company with ~200 employees globally, including engineers from Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Stanford. You will lead the Android Core Product team as a hands-on manager who continues writing and reviewing code while guiding team direction and process. This role balances individual contribution with leadership responsibilities: you'll own major features end-to-end from design through release, maintain reliability metrics, provide mentoring code reviews, and unblock teammates. You'll also standardize shared components across the codebase, reduce manual work in the release process, improve test automation, run planning sessions, and facilitate cross-functional discussions with Product and Design teams. Key responsibilities include owning feature delivery, maintaining code quality and testing standards, consolidating duplicate solutions, improving CI/CD and verification processes, handling critical issues, and ensuring junior engineers have learning opportunities. You'll call for process changes when needed and help the team adapt to working with AI agents. The role is explicitly hands-on: code you write remains a significant part of your impact, with leadership work comprising the other half. The company values flat hierarchy, technical excellence, fast execution, and strong communication. You'll work in a distributed setting with no physical office. REQUIREMENTS: - 5+ years of software engineering experience, including time leading a team or owning a major surface while staying hands-on - Expert-level Kotlin, Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Music Player Service, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, and JUnit tests - Experience shipping and maintaining background audio or other long-running background work - Understanding of testing importance and approach, including limitations of automated tests - Demonstrated ability to introduce a practice or tool to a team that persisted after you stopped advocating for it, with honest reflection on adoption costs - Comfort with the difficult aspects of leadership: asking people to change workflows and managing resulting friction - Informed perspective on which code changes require heavy review versus lighter review, grounded in system behavior - Track record of building tools and systems that the broader team actually adopted, not only personal productivity gains - Ability to describe how your team works with AI agents, not just personal AI usage - Product design intuition, user empathy, and drive to push Android UI/UX beyond specifications - Self-motivation to improve the app and codebase beyond outlined requirements - Excellent communication skills BONUS: Open source Android contributions, iOS/Web/NodeJS experience.
