Holistiplan is seeking a Tax Research Analyst to serve as the critical bridge between tax law and product logic. You'll analyze federal and state tax law changes, translate complex tax rules into precise calculation specifications, and ensure the accuracy of tax calculations that power the platform used by financial advisors.
Key responsibilities include: analyzing new and evolving tax law to identify impacts on existing calculations and determine where new logic is needed; translating product requirements into detailed calculation specifications with correct inputs, thresholds, phaseouts, and edge cases; validating existing calculations against authoritative sources and known scenarios; writing clear, unambiguous documentation that engineers and QA can implement and test without ambiguity; investigating reported bugs to identify root cause and propose corrections grounded in tax law; identifying and documenting edge cases across diverse client situations; monitoring legislative and regulatory developments (IRS guidance, revenue rulings, statutes) and flagging required updates; maintaining auditable source documentation (statutes, regulations, IRS publications, case law) tied to each calculation; partnering with product, engineering, and QA teams to clarify requirements and support regression testing; and serving as a subject-matter resource for internal teams on tax rules and product implementation.
Required qualifications: strong knowledge of federal tax law and regulations with independent research and interpretation ability; demonstrated ability to translate complex tax rules into clear, structured calculation logic; excellent written communication skills producing precise, unambiguous documentation; strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to edge cases; experience validating calculations against authoritative sources; comfort working cross-functionally with product and engineering teams; meticulous attention to detail and ability to navigate ambiguity in tax law interpretation.
Preferred qualifications include: CPA, EA, JD, or Master's in Taxation (active, inactive, or in progress); prior tax research, tax content development, or tax technology experience (tax software, CPA firm, law firm); familiarity with individual (1040) federal and state tax planning including pass-through entities and K-1s; experience with tax research tools (CCH, Checkpoint, Bloomberg Tax/BNA); experience writing functional requirements or test cases for software; familiarity with financial planning concepts; experience with bug tracking tools (Jira, Shortcut).
