Anthropic is seeking a Tax Director to lead the company's global income tax provision and US income tax compliance function. This is a core operational leadership role reporting to the CFO, responsible for running quarterly and annual ASC 740 closes, managing the co-sourced Big 4 compliance program, and building the processes, controls, and team that scale with the company's rapid growth.
The role is distinctive because of the complexity flowing through it. Anthropic is deploying capital into compute and data center infrastructure at unprecedented scale, alongside an active M&A program, strategic investments, and joint ventures. Every transaction lands in the provision and tax returns. The ideal candidate brings hands-on experience with complex M&A and infrastructure transactions alongside core provision and compliance expertise.
Key responsibilities include: owning the worldwide income tax provision (current and deferred computations, effective tax rate reconciliation, valuation allowances, uncertain tax positions, return-to-provision true-ups); managing tax journal entries, account reconciliations, income tax footnotes, disclosures, and SOX controls; coordinating international provision components; managing the US federal and state compliance program; owning cash tax forecasting and audit defense; driving automation and AI tooling adoption; owning tax purchase price allocation workpapers for acquisitions; analyzing data center and infrastructure lease arrangements and financing structures; preparing technical memos for auditors and leadership; modeling cash tax and effective tax rate consequences of proposed structures; mentoring tax team members; and managing outside advisors and budgets.
Minimum qualifications: substantial experience managing a corporate tax function in multinational software/technology, with Big 4 public accounting and in-house tax department experience; full ownership of ASC 740 provision cycles at a multinational company including deferred taxes, valuation allowances, uncertain tax positions, footnotes, SOX controls, and auditor management; management of US federal and state compliance programs at scale with Big 4 co-sourced arrangements; hands-on experience with complex M&A transactions, tax purchase price allocations, ASC 805 opening balance sheet accounting, and ideally infrastructure leases and financing arrangements; ability to write clear technical memos that satisfy Big 4 auditors and explain issues in plain terms to non-tax partners; CPA certification (Master's in Taxation or LLM preferred); comfort with novel fact patterns and ambiguity.
