TRM Labs is seeking a Strategic Finance Manager for R&D to serve as the dedicated finance partner for the company's research and development investments. You will own comprehensive modeling of R&D spend, including cloud infrastructure, AI and compute costs, and engineering headcount, translating this into strategic decisions that maintain efficient scaling relative to revenue.
Key responsibilities include: maintaining cloud infrastructure and AI/compute cost models using BigQuery and AI-assisted analysis to deliver variance readouts to leadership within days of month-end; building scenario models in Pigment and TRM's Claude-powered scenario engine to provide the CTO and engineering leaders with live headcount capacity views; reducing R&D finance reporting time by extending TRM's board-deck automation; and partnering with the Head of AI to optimize spend and surface build-vs-buy opportunities.
You will work within a small, high-leverage Strategic Finance team that operates directly with senior leadership on forecasting, decision support, and company-wide strategy. The team is distributed across US time zones and operates with a high bar for execution and direct feedback. You will partner cross-functionally with the CTO, engineering and infrastructure leaders, Recruiting, and Accounting.
Required qualifications: 5-8 years in investment banking, investing, consulting, or finance at high-growth technology companies, with demonstrated ownership of monthly, quarterly, and annual planning and reporting cycles; hands-on fluency with AI tools (Claude, ChatGPT) in real finance work; expert-level Excel and Google Sheets modeling; and experience building scalable, AI-assisted or agentic engines (e.g., Pigment). Experience supporting technical or product organizations (Engineering, Product, Data Science, Infrastructure) is strongly preferred, particularly with cloud and compute cost management.
TRM operates at high velocity with a focus on clarity, follow-through, and impact. The environment requires high ownership, adaptability, and creative problem-solving. Work involves complex problems at the intersection of AI, national security, and crime prevention. The team operates with async-first collaboration in Slack, with synchronous time reserved for planning and cross-functional decisions. Planning cadences include monthly reforecasts, quarterly reviews, and annual planning.
