Graphcore, a leading AI compute innovator and member of the SoftBank Group, is seeking a Staff System Tests & Diagnostics Engineer to develop and extend specialized silicon validation and diagnostics tools for next-generation AI SoCs.
Unlike traditional validation roles focused on test execution, this position centers on developing diagnostic software and stress tools that expose hardware failures, characterize silicon behavior, and improve platform observability during bring-up and validation phases.
You will work with existing Arm-developed diagnostics technologies and extend them to support Graphcore's next-generation AI silicon. Key responsibilities include developing system-level diagnostics and stress tools that detect data integrity, computational correctness, performance, and reliability issues across CPUs, AI accelerators, memory, storage, PCIe, firmware, BMC, and other platform components. Examples include silent data corruption (SDC) tests, power transient stress tools, and platform diagnostics, with opportunities to develop new capabilities as hardware evolves.
Specific duties encompass learning and extending Arm diagnostics tools, developing specialized diagnostics for CPU, memory, interconnect, and PCIe systems, building reusable validation utilities, creating tools to expose intermittent hardware failures, designing configurable diagnostic applications supporting multiple silicon revisions, developing automation for server and rack-scale validation environments, collaborating with hardware architects to identify missing diagnostics, debugging low-level hardware/firmware/OS/driver interactions, analyzing diagnostic output, and contributing reusable libraries that improve engineering productivity.
Required qualifications include a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline, plus 10+ years developing hardware diagnostics, system validation software, firmware validation tools, or low-level systems software. Strong proficiency in Python and C/C++, deep Linux systems experience, and comprehensive understanding of modern server platform architecture (CPU, memory, PCIe, storage, networking, firmware, OS, device drivers) are essential. You must have experience debugging hardware/software interactions across multiple platform layers, developing diagnostics/stress testing/hardware validation software, and working with server platforms, embedded systems, or SoC validation. Strong analytical, debugging, communication, and problem-solving skills are required.
Desirable qualifications include experience with Arm-based server platforms, AI accelerators or high-performance computing systems, and silent data corruption testing.
