Thrive Market is a membership-based e-commerce platform founded in 2014 with a mission to make healthy and sustainable living easy and affordable. The company serves over 1.7 million members and is a Certified B Corporation, Public Benefit Corporation, and Climate Neutral Certified company.
You will serve as a Staff Software Engineer on the Member Growth team, responsible for setting technical direction and architecture across multiple pods. This is a high-leverage role focused on systems thinking, architectural decision-making, and technical leadership without direct people management.
Key responsibilities include:
- Setting technical direction for Member Growth's systems and owning architecture evolution across pods
- Identifying highest-leverage problems in the funnel, platform, and ways of working; proposing solutions with clear technical designs and RFCs
- Making system-level architectural decisions on eventing (Kafka, SQS), workflow orchestration (Temporal, Airflow), caching, async pipelines, and service decomposition
- Designing for horizontal scale and low, uniform latency under production traffic patterns
- Decomposing existing services into scalable components with clear migration paths
- Working cross-team with Frontend Core, Backend Core, Data, and product teams to align on shared systems and contracts
- Breaking down fuzzy, multi-team problems into clear plans with defined owners and driving them to completion
- Building consensus across engineers, Product, and leadership through clear communication, diagrams, and data-driven reasoning
- Tying engineering decisions to business outcomes through instrumentation and observability
- Establishing design, code, and operational standards; mentoring and elevating engineers around you
- Owning SLAs for Member Growth surfaces and maintaining health standards
- Leveraging AI tooling to multiply team output
The role emphasizes strong CS fundamentals, systems reasoning, and the ability to influence without authority. You will work with a modern stack: PHP/Magento on the backend, React/Next on the frontend, deployed on AWS.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- 8+ years building and operating high-traffic, customer-facing systems with technical leadership across multiple teams
- Strong CS fundamentals: object-oriented design, relational database design, systems reasoning
- Fluency with distributed systems: eventing (Kafka, SNS, SQS), workflow orchestration (Temporal, Airflow, DAGs), caching, async pipelines, idempotency, backpressure
- Comfortable moving between layers and stacks; language is a tool, not an identity
- Working knowledge of AWS (Lambda, S3, CloudWatch, SQS, etc.) and clear reasoning about relational, document, and wide-column store tradeoffs
- Track record of shipping high-impact, customer-facing features in production at scale
- Track record of setting technical direction: proposals written, architectures adopted, migrations landed, standards others follow
- Strong written and visual communicator; diagrams, design docs, and proposals are core to your thinking
- Demonstrated influence without authority: aligned engineers, Product, and leadership across teams on direction and delivered it
- Measurable track record of leveling up engineers around you
- Concise, high-altitude communicator who defaults to options plus recommendation
- Member-first orientation: Customer, Team, and Business, in that order
- Observability and monitoring experience (New Relic, Datadog, or similar) to maintain SLA, Apdex, and error rate
- Growth, e-commerce, subscription, or membership experience is a plus: funnels, experimentation, attribution and pixels, payments and recurring billing
