Salary: USD 405,000 - 485,000 / annual
Anthropic is hiring a Staff Software Engineer to lead the Claude Science product—an AI workbench designed to accelerate scientific research across biology, chemistry, physics, and beyond. Claude Science integrates literature, specialized databases, scientific computing, analysis, and publication-ready outputs into a single environment, with native rendering of protein structures, genome tracks, and chemical structures, plus multi-agent workflows with built-in review for citations and calculations.
In this role, you'll be a technical leader who thinks holistically about the end-to-end researcher experience. You'll partner directly with Anthropic's internal research team to push model capabilities into production, carry real ownership over shipped features, and help shape both the product and architecture in a category still being defined. Your north star is accelerating scientific progress by an order of magnitude, supporting initiatives like Anthropic's AI for Science Program and rare disease research grants.
Key responsibilities include shipping fast against a roadmap you help shape; interfacing directly with working scientists (academic labs, industry R&D teams, research institutes) to translate their needs into engineering priorities; partnering with product and design to turn how scientists actually work—from hypothesis to analysis to publication—into shipped product; and working closely with research to improve model capabilities for science, including shaping evals, surfacing failure modes, and feeding real-world user insights back into model development.
You should have 8+ years of software engineering experience with 2+ years at Staff or equivalent technical leadership level. You've built products from 0 to 1 in fast-moving environments and can set technical direction with limited precedent. You have experience building AI products and know how to turn model capabilities into applications people actually use. You're comfortable working directly with technical domain experts and translating their needs, and you drive cross-team alignment to ship impactful work through influence over authority.
Bonus qualifications include a background in chemistry, biology, physics, or another science, and experience working with research teams to improve domain-specific model capabilities, including evaluation frameworks.
The role is hybrid with an expectation of at least 25% in-office time, though some roles may require more. Anthropic sponsors visas and will make every reasonable effort to support candidates who need sponsorship.
