Salary: USD 100,000 - 300,000 / annual
Hercules is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to own and build the company's billing, payments, and monetization infrastructure. This is a full ownership role spanning multiple critical systems.
Responsibilities:
- Own all billing and monetization systems at Hercules, including plans, subscriptions, entitlements, prorations, credits, and one-time charges
- Design and implement usage-based billing infrastructure for AI credits, cloud credits, usage metering, and overage charges
- Integrate with and support multiple payment providers (Stripe, Adyen, PayPal, and others) across various payment methods and currencies
- Build Hercules Commerce, a billing and payment platform that customers can embed in their applications (similar to Stripe Connect)
- Architect for latency, reliability, and scale, including robust webhook processing, retries, and reconciliation as volumes grow
- Ship features independently and iterate quickly based on customer feedback
The role requires exceptional strength across billing/payments domain expertise, software fundamentals (system design, architecture, data modeling, API design), code quality and codebase management, product sense, and the ability to leverage AI tools for productivity.
Hercules' tech stack includes TypeScript, React, Postgres, Redis, Temporal, Clickhouse, Docker, Terraform/CDK, and runs on Cloudflare and AWS. The team uses OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google AI models.
The company operates from San Francisco (Kearny and Bush) with a strong in-office preference. Remote work is considered for exceptional candidates willing to work US time zones and travel to the office regularly.
Requirements:
- Extensive experience with billing and payment providers (Stripe, Adyen, etc.), subscriptions, usage-based billing, and payment regulation
- Strong software fundamentals: system design, architecture, data modeling, API design
- Track record of writing clean, maintainable code and working effectively in monorepos
- Demonstrated ability to independently ship multiple features to customers
- Proficiency in TypeScript, React, Postgres, Redis, and Temporal
- Ability to leverage frontier AI tools (like AI coding assistants) to 10x workflow productivity
