ICEYE is seeking a Staff Product Designer to lead design on a greenfield product combining AI/LLMs with space-based intelligence and data analytics. This is a hands-on individual contributor role—not a management position—where you'll own design end-to-end from problem definition through shipped UI, without handoffs.
You'll work on one of ICEYE's most exciting products in a space where the problems are genuinely novel and unsolved. The role involves designing for complex, data-heavy workflows in the defense and intelligence domain, turning cutting-edge technology into intuitive user experiences. You'll be an early hire shaping design foundations, patterns, and quality standards that future designers will build upon.
Day-to-day responsibilities include:
- Own complete design ownership: research, concept, prototyping, and polished UI delivery
- Conduct regular user research with actual operators; observe workflows in ground stations and translate insights into design decisions
- Simplify complex AI/LLM and data-heavy workflows into obvious, intuitive experiences
- Prototype rapidly and test with real users and real data before engineering commitment
- Collaborate closely with engineers, data scientists, and product managers from problem framing onward
- Establish design foundations, patterns, and quality bars for the product
- Deliver sharp design feedback and raise the craft standard on every release
- Work independently to identify needs, rally stakeholders, and ship without waiting for permission
ICEYE delivers space-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities using world-leading synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite technology. The company serves governments, defense, intelligence, and commercial sectors (civil protection, insurance, maritime monitoring, finance) with near real-time Earth observation data. Headquartered in Finland with 900+ employees globally, ICEYE operates across Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific.
The role is permanent, hybrid (3 days/week in office in Espoo), and reports to the Product Design Director. Employment is subject to applicable security screening.
REQUIREMENTS:
Must-haves:
- Top-tier craft demonstrated in a strong portfolio: sharp UX thinking, beautiful execution, obsessive attention to detail
- Proven experience designing data products, ML, or AI systems with informed opinions on what makes these experiences challenging
- Shipped design work with measurable impact (adoption increases, churn reduction, improved user satisfaction); ability to articulate outcomes with data
- Deep user obsession: proactively seek customer conversations, ask difficult questions, and let evidence reshape assumptions
- Comfort with messy, ambiguous problems where playbooks don't exist and solutions are genuinely uncertain
- Ownership mentality: take responsibility for wins and failures alike, communicate learnings transparently
- Self-directed execution: spot needs, mobilize teams, and ship without requiring permission or process overhead
Nice-to-haves:
- Experience designing in highly technical environments alongside engineers or scientists on complex systems
- Genuine interest in satellites and Earth observation technology
