Salary: USD 160,000 - 194,000 / annual
Muon Space, a LEO satellite constellation provider founded in 2021, seeks a Staff Mission Formulation Lead to join the Mission Innovation team. This is a high-impact individual contributor role bridging technical expertise and business development to identify and develop new market opportunities in Earth observation and infrared remote sensing.
You will lead mission formulation contracts and strategic capture campaigns for high-value opportunities across government, defense, intelligence, commercial, and philanthropic sectors. Key responsibilities include executing complex multi-stage programs from early engagement through design concepts and delivery; leading creation of technical proposals, white papers, and concept studies; performing feasibility and trade studies; and supporting customer discovery to translate operational needs into technical requirements.
You will act as the scientific engine and creative force exploring new applications of Muon's satellite and remote sensing technologies, developing advanced mission concepts, and engaging directly with customers. You'll collaborate cross-functionally with product, business development, and engineering teams while potentially serving as Principal Investigator on R&D activities and proposals.
Required: B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Physics, Remote Sensing, Earth Science, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field. 7+ years in Earth remote sensing mission and/or instrument development. Strong foundation in first principles with ability to decompose mission objectives into technical solutions. Background in infrared, multispectral, or hyperspectral remote sensing phenomenologies. Experience with EO/IR space missions across government and commercial markets. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong collaborative abilities across disciplines. TS/SCI clearance or ability to obtain.
Nice-to-have: Programming proficiency (Python, MATLAB, Julia); early-stage business development experience; strategic planning or scenario planning training; space systems development familiarity.
