Divergent 3D is seeking a Staff Opto-Mechanical Engineer to serve as technical owner for optical and opto-mechanical systems within their laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) additive manufacturing platform. This is a high-impact individual contributor role with company-wide technical scope.
You will own system performance, reliability, calibration, and continued development of critical optical and opto-mechanical hardware on production machines already operating in the field. Key responsibilities include serving as technical authority for printer optics and beam-delivery systems; leading root-cause investigations into focus, spot size, scan-field behavior, alignment, thermal drift, vibration, contamination, and mechanical stability; translating fleet and production issues into structured investigations and durable design improvements; and developing optical error budgets, requirements, calibration strategies, and validation methods.
You will determine whether performance issues should be addressed through calibration, compensation, hardware changes, process changes, or architectural redesign. You will plan and lead optical characterization, prototype testing, design-of-experiments, and system validation. When needed, you will work hands-on with printers to assemble, align, calibrate, characterize, and troubleshoot optical systems.
This role requires cross-functional collaboration with software, controls, service, process, manufacturing, quality, and supplier teams to improve calibration, diagnostics, compensation, print consistency, robustness, and fleet performance. You will identify limitations in current optical architecture and define improvements for current and future printer generations. You will establish reusable engineering standards, design practices, test methods, and troubleshooting approaches, and mentor engineers on technical decisions where optical performance depends on interactions across multiple disciplines.
