Shield AI is a venture-backed defense-tech company developing autonomous systems and aircraft for military and civilian protection. This Staff Engineer role focuses on the electromechanical motor design for the X-BAT and next-generation aircraft platforms.
You will own the complete design lifecycle of electric motors and related systems, including wound field motors, permanent magnet motors, and mechanical structural components. Responsibilities include designing subsystems that integrate seamlessly with aircraft structure, engines, power electronics, and thermal systems. You will create detailed 3D CAD models and 2D technical drawings at both component and motor subsystem levels, then release comprehensive work instructions and documentation in collaboration with manufacturing teams.
The role is highly hands-on: you will execute testing and full qualification on dynamometer test stands, engine test stands, and complete aircraft platforms. You will also perform noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) testing on motors, power electronics, and vehicle powertrain/thermal systems to ensure performance and reliability.
Shield AI operates globally with offices and facilities across the U.S., Europe, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific, with technology actively supporting operations worldwide.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of experience in mechanical design of electric motors
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent
- Strong technical fundamentals in material selection, mechanics, dynamics, thermal analysis, design for manufacturability (DFM), and tolerancing
- Proficiency with 3D CAD modeling
- Experience with GD&T, stack-up analyses (linear and radial), and determining realistic tolerancing limits based on manufacturing best practices
- Demonstrated track record of delivering motor products from design through production
- Hands-on experience verifying motor performance and integrating with power electronics
- Experience testing for noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH)
- Hands-on prototyping, testing, and troubleshooting experience
- Demonstrated record of working hard, being a trustworthy teammate, holding high standards, and treating others with kindness
