Proxima Fusion is Europe's fastest-growing fusion company and the continent's best-funded fusion player, backed by over €650M. As a spin-out from the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics, the company is developing hardware and infrastructure for the world's first commercial stellarator fusion power plant. The team spans Munich, Zurich, and Oxford, combining stellarator optimization, advanced computation, machine learning, and high-temperature superconducting magnets to unlock higher-performance fusion designs. As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will significantly contribute to the design, analysis, validation, and realization of Proxima's Alpha stellarator fusion machine. Your work will deliver robust mechanical, structural, and thermal performance of critical systems, tooling, and manufacturing processes. You will collaborate with external suppliers and partners to develop the designs, equipment, systems, and materials enabling Proxima's mission to deliver clean, sustainable fusion energy. Key responsibilities include: - Developing innovative solutions and detailed mechanical designs for significant systems within the Alpha stellarator, ensuring integration with physics, mechanical, and structural systems - Conducting thermal and structural analysis and assessment of mechanical designs, providing design input and implementing improvements - Performing technology trade-offs, materials selections, and feasibility studies to support the Alpha net energy stellarator - Designing, delivering, and supporting prototyping and verification of components, materials, assemblies, and manufacturing processes - Working with external suppliers and collaborators to guide development and manufacture of components and systems This role sits at L2/L3/L4 of Proxima's engineering framework. Successful applicants will be assigned to one of the Engineering teams depending on specific skills, location, and organizational needs. REQUIREMENTS: - High performers with excellent communication and problem-solving skills who embrace challenges, experimentation, and learning from mistakes - Experience designing and analyzing mechanical components and assemblies, with proficiency in CAD (3DExperience/CATIA v6 and ANSYS highly beneficial but not essential) - Experience in conceptual and detailed design of mechanical, structural, thermal, or electro-mechanical equipment, particularly for research, development, prototyping, and manufacturing - Knowledge and experience designing and selecting materials for high-temperature, cryogenic, electromagnetic, and/or vacuum engineering applications - Demonstrated ability to work with and manage external suppliers and multidisciplinary technical teams in fast-paced, dynamic settings - Proficiency with programming languages used in science and engineering (particularly Python) highly beneficial but not essential
