Plume is a mission-driven healthtech company transforming gender-affirming hormone therapy accessibility across the US through a telehealth platform. As Engineering Manager, you will lead and mentor a team of software and QA engineers while maintaining hands-on technical contributions—spending approximately half your time in leadership and half in individual technical work.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & People Development: Manage and mentor both software engineers and QA engineers through 1:1s, feedback, and performance evaluations. Hire and build engineering and QA talent. Foster a psychologically safe, inclusive, and collaborative team environment.
Quality Assurance & Platform Stability: Define and implement a comprehensive QA strategy combining automated, manual, and regression testing. Monitor quality metrics (defect escape rates, test pass/fail trends, mean time to detect/resolve) and QA validation throughput. Continuously optimize testing pipelines and bug triage workflows. Ensure all releases meet rigorous quality standards, data privacy mandates, and HIPAA compliance.
Engineering Systems & Delivery: Design and refine SDLC processes and agile systems for predictable, high-velocity delivery. Manage and align engineering and QA capacity to organizational priorities. Establish clear tracking mechanisms, project milestones, and delivery dashboards for transparency.
Strategic Collaboration: Partner cross-functionally with Product, Clinical Operations, and Support teams. Communicate technical concepts and release readiness to non-technical stakeholders. Stay informed on industry trends, modern test automation frameworks, and evolving engineering methodologies, including thoughtful navigation of AI capabilities aligned with company philosophy.
Hands-On Technical Contribution: Actively write code, implement features, and resolve complex bugs alongside your team. Facilitate collaborative technical design discussions and RFC reviews. Conduct code reviews and foster testing best practices (unit, integration, end-to-end). Troubleshoot complex production issues across the stack.
Requirements:
Must Have:
- 7+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 2+ years in an engineering management, tech lead, or player-coach capacity
- Demonstrated experience managing or overseeing QA functions, including test strategy definition, QA workflow design, and automated testing integration
- Active, hands-on coding proficiency in core stack: Node.js, Python, PostgreSQL, React, and serverless architectures (AWS Lambda)
- Proven ability to facilitate technical and architectural discussions, empowering engineers to lead design decisions while maintaining high standards for system reliability and scalability
- Thoughtful approach to modern developer tooling and AI, with ability to evaluate and integrate new tools in harmony with team consensus, engineering ethics, and organizational guidelines
- Proven track record of managing quality metrics and validation throughput (defect density, test automation coverage, release cycle duration) to drive platform reliability
- Demonstrated experience balancing direct technical contributions (feature development, debugging, bug fixes) with people management and process ownership
- Fluency in modern QA and operational practices, including test automation frameworks, CI/CD test suites, and observability/monitoring tools
- Clear, empathetic communication skills with ability to bridge technical and non-technical domains across clinical and operational stakeholders
- Strong empathy for and understanding of the transgender community, including unique nuances and barriers in gender-affirming healthcare
Nice-to-Have:
- Experience in telehealth, digital health, or HealthTech with working familiarity with HIPAA regulations and PHI safeguarding
- Experience implementing or scaling automated end-to-end testing frameworks (Playwright, Cypress, Jest)
- Background in fast-paced startup or scale-up environments navigating rapid growth and evolving team structures
- Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform
