You will own Stylus, Scribe's design system, and drive the quality of what ships across the web app, desktop app, browser extension, and marketing site. This role sits at the intersection of design and frontend engineering, where you'll combine design judgment with hands-on coding to determine which interactions are worth building and then build them well.
Key responsibilities include:
- Owning the Stylus roadmap, triage, and governance, measured against component adoption, accessibility coverage, documentation health, and regular design system surveys.
- Building complex components where aesthetics and performance compete, deciding what becomes a shared primitive versus a one-off.
- Prototyping in code and validating with customers using React and TypeScript for interactions faster to explore in code than Figma.
- Collaborating directly with designers without handoffs, iterating together in Figma or code, and providing realistic cost estimates for interactions.
- Keeping design and code aligned through token management, legacy component migration, and Figma-to-code tooling.
- Exploring AI-ready design patterns and building primitives for agent-assembled UI.
- Documenting and sharing workflows, prompts, and patterns from tools like Cursor and Claude Code; mentoring engineers on design principles.
In your first 90 days, you'll ship a Stylus change in production within the first two weeks, map the current state of component drift and accessibility coverage, meet stakeholders and watch customers use the product, publish the Stylus roadmap with a quality bar, build a hard component, start legacy migration, set up automated reporting on system health, and ship initial AI workflows.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 8+ years of front-end development experience with strong design sensibility and deep knowledge of CSS, the DOM, and browser rendering.
- Demonstrated design ability: can make calls on interactions and understand which ones aren't worth their build cost.
- Hands-on experience working on a design system at depth, including components, primitives, tokens, versioning, adoption, and governance.
- Ability to shape work rather than take tickets; accountable for roadmaps and comfortable saying no.
- Current experience building with AI tools like Cursor and Claude Code; ability to help others use them effectively.
- Default handling of accessibility, keyboard and touch input, and user preferences.
NICE TO HAVE:
- Figma plugins, automations, or CI checks for design system adoption and accessibility reporting.
- Web components or multi-framework experience, including shipping systems into non-React surfaces.
- Desktop app or browser extension experience, especially always-on applications.
- Agent-facing or generative UI work.
