Salary: AUD 168,000 - 210,000 / annual
Grafana Labs is seeking a Staff Backend Software Engineer to join the Databases team, which owns the telemetry databases powering Grafana Cloud: Mimir (metrics), Loki (logs), Tempo (traces), and Pyroscope (profiles). These are open-source projects also offered as managed cloud services and on-premise solutions. The role is available for candidates located in Australia or Singapore.
You will design, build, operate, and maintain critical distributed systems, owning their reliability, performance, and availability. You'll take an active role in influencing the team's roadmap and your own career objectives. Working with your team, you'll deliver new features, iterate based on results, and drive projects from ideation through to production operations. You'll embrace the open-source culture, contribute to projects beyond your immediate scope, participate in on-call rotations, and mentor other team members while collaborating on design discussions.
The tech stack is primarily Go, running on Kubernetes across major cloud providers (GCP, Azure, AWS). As a remote-first company with team members across 40+ countries, you'll work independently with strong communication skills, guided by regular video calls and a culture of transparency and trust.

REQUIREMENTS:
- Solid experience with at least one programming language (Go preferred; Python, C, C++, Rust, or similar also valued)
- Experience delivering projects end-to-end: gathering requirements, brainstorming, shipping to customers in a self-driven manner
- Experience developing software that runs in the cloud OR experience with systems engineering
- Experience writing clean, robust, performant software that is easily maintained by others
BONUS POINTS FOR:
- Experience writing low-level code for databases, storage layers, or query engines
- Experience working with Kubernetes
- User experience with Grafana and/or Prometheus in operational roles (on-call, hobby projects, homelab)
- Exposure to microservices architecture and distributed systems, or desire to learn
- Familiarity with on-call operations/SRE tasks or infrastructure as code
