Anduril Industries is a defense technology company building advanced autonomy, AI, and sensor fusion systems for U.S. and allied military capabilities. The Mission Autonomy team develops the software ecosystem for commanding and controlling collaborative combat aircraft (CCA), deployed both onboard air vehicles and in ground control stations.
As Senior Technical Writer for Mission Autonomy, you will partner with autonomy engineers, platform integration teams, and flight test specialists to deliver accurate, user-focused documentation on integrating, configuring, and operating Anduril's autonomy software. Your mission is to ensure operators—from Air Vehicle Controllers to Quarterbacks—understand how autonomy behaves across operating modes, what it will and will not do autonomously, and how to task, override, and approve its actions.
Key responsibilities include:
- Generate, review, and edit user-focused documentation working with engineering and test teams to deliver task- and conditions-centric content
- Document autonomy behaviors, operating modes, and failure/contingency handling so users and integrators can predict system response; maintain accuracy across releases
- Own interface and message reference documentation for the autonomy stack, working from government reference definitions, protobuf/schema definitions, and source code
- Produce developer and integrator reference material including architecture, design documents, sequence/state diagrams, and configuration references
- Contribute to Anduril's technical writing toolkit: style guides, documentation lifecycle, review processes, and software tool procurement (authoring, publishing, static site generators, S1000D environments)
- Run intake and triage for documentation requests; keep published sites accurate, navigable, and current across releases
- Evaluate and prioritize documentation tasks; use data-driven approaches to support product documentation roadmaps and fill gaps that represent risks
- Communicate and manage expectations; identify risks early with mitigations and resource allocation
- Support flight test and demonstration events by capturing procedures, configuration baselines, and lessons learned; turn test results into documentation updates
- Build a culture of technical documentation by creating processes and training for others to contribute; refine product maturity frameworks so documentation is a meaningful productization step
You will work across two authoring environments: internally, a docs-as-code pipeline keeps technical documentation aligned with engineering; for customer and contract deliverables, you will author structured content in S1000D using RapidAuthor against a Common Source Data Base. A significant part of your charter is keeping these environments coherent so engineering-authored source content flows into formal deliverables without being rewritten from scratch.
Documentation artifacts may include mission planning/execution/debrief user guides, autonomy task and behavior overviews, deployment and configuration manuals, message and API reference catalogs, architecture and design documents, integration and test procedures, flight manual and checklist inputs, glossaries, and release notes. You will partner with ILS, product, and engineering teams across all product development phases, including third-party air vehicle and ground control vendors who integrate against autonomy interfaces.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of demonstrated excellence generating technical documentation for software or software-intensive systems
- Experience reading and interpreting engineering documentation, including interface and message definitions, schemas, and requirements artifacts; comfort reading source code
- Experience building content in a variety of authoring tools including word editors and specialized software (e.g., Arbortext, RapidAuthor)
- Working knowledge of S1000D structured authoring, including data module development against a Common Source Data Base and applicable business rules
- Comfort working in a developer toolchain: Git-based version control and pull request review, Markdown or MDX, and documentation that builds and deploys through CI as part of a software pipeline
- Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, with emphasis on technical subjects
- Must thrive with autonomy and responsibility, managing competing priorities and tight deadlines; impeccable project-management skills
- Passion for excellent documentation and user experience
- Must be eligible for Secret and higher security clearance (US)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience writing technical user-facing documentation
- Previous experience creating technical documentation in Aerospace and Defense (for DoD)
- Experience documenting uncrewed aircraft systems, autonomy, AI/ML software, flight software, or mission planning systems
- Familiarity with government reference architectures and interfaces for autonomy and collaborative combat aircraft (e.g., A-GRA, A-GRI)
- Hands-on experience with documentation static site generators such as Docusaurus, MkDocs, or Sphinx, including sidebar/information architecture, search, and diagram-as-code tooling such as Mermaid
- Military exposure and experience with military technical documentation standards (S1000D, MIL-STD-40051, MIL-STD-38784, MIL-DTL-7700)
- Experience documenting software release content in an Agile environment
- Experience supporting airworthiness, safety-of-flight, or test readiness review documentation
