Fuse is building a fusion energy company with a mission to accelerate the world's transition to clean energy. You will establish and lead Fuse's accounting function from the ground up, consolidating currently fragmented external accounting across multiple entities into a cohesive, reliable in-house operation. On day one, there is no team reporting to you—you'll be hands-on and directly executing accounting work alongside building systems and processes. As the company scales, you'll grow the function and team accordingly. Core responsibilities include: monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close and reporting; managing relationships with external accounting firms while maintaining consistency across all entities and subsidiaries; accounts payable, receivable, vendor payments, customer invoicing, and collections; treasury and cash management including bank account administration, cash positioning, and reconciliations; federal, state, and local tax filings and registrations; R&D tax credit filings and documentation; audit preparation and execution; government contract accounting for Fuse Federal (DoD and DOE work), including cost accounting standards (DCAA/FAR/CAS compliance); internal controls design and implementation; and compliance with state registrations and business licenses. You'll need 6+ years of accounting experience, including time at a Big 4 firm and a high-growth startup. CPA certification (or active pursuit) is required. You should have meaningful exposure across the responsibilities listed—you don't need to have led every function, but you need breadth. Preferred experience includes hardware, deep tech, or capex-heavy companies; fast-growing startups; and government/defense contract accounting. The role requires relocation to San Leandro, CA if not already local. You may occasionally work extended hours and weekends, and some business travel to other Fuse facilities is possible. ITAR compliance is required: you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or eligible to obtain required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
