Cala Health is a medical device company pioneering non-invasive prescription therapies for chronic disease, starting with hand tremor treatment. The company is expanding its technology platform across neurology, cardiology, and beyond.
You will join the digital quality assurance team as a Software Test Engineer, serving as a quality gate for mobile apps, web platforms, and APIs. This role combines manual exploratory testing with test automation to ensure product reliability in a regulated healthcare environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform functional, exploratory, sanity, and end-to-end testing across iOS and Android mobile applications and web platforms, including device and OS compatibility testing on physical devices, emulators, and simulators
- Design, build, and maintain automated test scripts using Playwright (JavaScript) for web and Appium (Java/Python) for mobile; grow regression test suites
- Validate REST API behavior independently of the UI—testing request/response contracts, status codes, authentication, error handling, and edge cases using tools like Postman
- Write structured test cases from requirements and user stories; maintain traceability between requirements, acceptance criteria, and test results
- Use AI tools to accelerate quality work: generating and reviewing test cases, drafting and refactoring automation scripts, triaging logs and failures; test AI-powered product features including non-deterministic behavior
- Identify, log, and track defects with clear reproduction steps and device logs (Xcode/Android Studio)
- Support release readiness through regression execution, results analysis, and clear reporting on test coverage and remaining risks
- Collaborate with Quality, Engineering, and Product teams to clarify expected behavior early and surface quality risks before release
The role reports to the Staff DevOps Engineer and is based in San Mateo, CA with remote flexibility.
Required Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience
- 1–3 years of hands-on software testing experience spanning both manual testing and automation
- Demonstrated manual testing competency: writing structured test cases, executing end-to-end test suites, capturing precise technical reproduction details
- Hands-on experience building web and mobile automation frameworks: Playwright with JavaScript for web; Appium with Java/Python for mobile
- Experience testing REST APIs using tools such as Postman
- Practical use of AI tools in day-to-day engineering work (test case generation, script authoring, log analysis, debugging) with good judgment about verification
- Comfort with mobile platform tooling: installing builds on devices, collecting device logs, managing emulators and simulators for iOS and Android
- Working knowledge of version control and running tests within CI/CD pipelines
- Clear written communication for defect reports and test documentation
Preferred Qualifications:
- Exposure to Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) or regulated software environments, including design controls and quality standards (ISO 13485, IEC 62304)
- Experience maintaining Requirements Traceability Matrices
- Experience with real-device cloud platforms such as BrowserStack
- Familiarity with performance, accessibility, or security testing fundamentals
- Basic scripting or tooling work to improve team testing efficiency
