New Relic is seeking a Software Engineer II to join the Personalization team on a greenfield project. You will build and scale backend services and Kafka-based streaming pipelines that process user behavior data across AWS infrastructure. The role focuses on designing microservices and APIs that expose user segments and behavioral models to downstream surfaces, including both classic UI and agentic experiences.
Key responsibilities include:
- Build, maintain, and scale backend services and Kafka-based streaming pipelines processing user behavior data on AWS
- Design microservices and APIs exposing user segments and behavioral models to classic and agentic surfaces
- Transform behavioral signals into segments and models for platform-wide use
- Actively evaluate and use AI coding assistants and agents in your engineering workflow, helping the team adopt effective tools
- Participate in architectural discussions on moderately scoped problems
- Build, deploy, rollback, and operate team software with active on-call participation
- Automate manual operational processes to maintain system resilience
- Provide constructive feedback and participate in engineering communities of practice
The tech stack centers on Java 25, Spring, GraphQL, NoSQL, Kubernetes, Kafka, and AWS. This is an opportunity to shape how New Relic's experiences adapt to users at scale, combining backend infrastructure with emerging AI-driven personalization.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Full proficiency with Java; ability to design, develop, test, and deploy small-to-medium features and bug fixes end-to-end with minimal assistance
- Production experience building Kafka-based streaming pipelines and services in AWS cloud environments
- Experience with distributed systems, concurrency, scaling, and asynchronous programming techniques (streams, event-based flows, task queues, message queues)
- Active, day-to-day experience using AI coding assistants and agents with a mindset of continuous workflow innovation
- Collaborative work style that includes colleagues in important decisions and leads to shared code ownership
- Comfort navigating ambiguity with an iterative mindset; ability to align day-to-day work with broader strategic and architectural direction
- Proficiency in English
BONUS EXPERIENCE:
- GraphQL API design or microservices architecture at scale
- Kubernetes concepts and production behavior reasoning
- Distributed data processing (Spark, Hadoop/Hive, BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift) or ETL/orchestration tools (Airflow)
- Data modeling principles (dimensional modeling, normalization) applied to behavioral or user segmentation
- Evaluating, benchmarking, or building custom agentic AI tools, prompt workflows, or developer automation
- Recommendation systems or building context for agentic/LLM-based experiences
- Open source contributions or passion for build/test automation
- SQL performance tuning or data visualization tools (Tableau, Looker)
