Kodiak Robotics is a leader in autonomous ground transportation, delivering driverless semi-trucks for commercial freight and developing autonomous capabilities for the U.S. Department of Defense. The company went public on NASDAQ in 2025 and operates a fleet of autonomous vehicles across the southern United States. You will join the Motion Planning & Controls team as a Controls Software Engineer focused on safety-critical motion control systems. Your responsibilities include designing and implementing feedback control and actuation strategies using both established and novel techniques; developing, testing, and maintaining reliable, redundant, safety-critical software that controls fully-loaded trucks in real-world conditions; and engaging with vehicle platform systems (steering, braking, throttle, engine management, dynamics) to build models for motion planning, simulation, and controls. You will work on fundamental problems in redundant actuation, degraded operation modes, and fail-safe control architectures. Collaboration across hardware, embedded systems, and systems engineering teams is essential to deliver a robust vehicle control architecture. You will create requirement specifications, implement features, plan and execute testing, and document results. Required experience includes production-level MATLAB and Simulink development; automatic code generation from MATLAB/Simulink to embedded C/C++; development, testing, and tuning of controllers for mobile autonomous robots (trucks, cars, or flying vehicles preferred); system identification, modeling, simulation, and characterization of complex dynamic systems; and a strong theoretical foundation in controls, system modeling, and redundant architectures with practical application to vehicle safety systems.
