Apple's Marcom Interactive Engineering team is seeking a Software Engineer to design, develop, and enhance modern, distributed, scalable Content Management Systems (CMS) that power apple.com and Apple's global digital experiences. This role is critical to evolving Apple's brand and digital infrastructure.
You will work on Java-based backend services, CMS platforms, content architecture, content modeling, workflows, APIs, integrations, search, and distributed systems. The focus is on building modern CMS platforms using headless architectures, open-source technologies, automation, and AI-powered engineering workflows.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, customize, and extend distributed, large-scale CMS platforms powering apple.com and other Apple digital experiences
- Build and enhance capabilities across the content lifecycle: creation, modeling, relationships, metadata, taxonomy, workflows, approvals, versioning, localization, publishing, and delivery
- Work hands-on with Java-based open-source CMS platforms and frameworks, extending capabilities to meet product and business requirements
- Design and develop headless and API-first CMS solutions enabling content delivery across web, mobile, and other digital channels
- Develop and integrate REST and GraphQL APIs for content authoring, management, preview, search, and delivery using Java and Spring Boot
- Build integrations between CMS platforms and search, digital asset management, identity, analytics, CDN, and other enterprise systems
- Design solutions for scalability, high availability, resiliency, fault tolerance, and efficient content delivery in distributed environments
- Implement caching, indexing, asynchronous processing, and event-driven mechanisms for large-scale CMS workloads
- Work with databases and data models supporting large content repositories and efficient content retrieval
- Develop and maintain supporting backend services and microservices in Java using Spring Boot and related frameworks
- Deploy and operate CMS services using Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud platforms
- Troubleshoot and resolve CMS, performance, scalability, integration, and production issues, including JVM-level performance and memory tuning
- Develop unit, integration, and API tests using JUnit and related Java testing frameworks; contribute to CI/CD and engineering automation
- Participate in technical design discussions, code reviews, and continuous improvement of the CMS platform
- Leverage AI coding assistants and AI agents to improve development productivity, code quality, testing, documentation, and engineering workflows
- Explore and build AI-powered capabilities and agentic workflows for CMS use cases
- Collaborate with product managers, architects, frontend engineers, DevOps teams, and content stakeholders
Minimum Qualifications:
- 3+ years of professional software development experience building scalable, highly available backend and web applications in Java
- Hands-on experience with Java (Java 11 or later) and the Spring / Spring Boot ecosystem, including dependency injection, Spring MVC, and Spring Data
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent work experience, with a focus on fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented design
- Experience designing and developing RESTful and/or GraphQL web services in Java
- Working knowledge of SQL and NoSQL databases and data modeling for content-heavy applications
- Experience with Java build and CI/CD tooling such as Maven or Gradle, Git, and Jenkins
- Experience writing unit and integration tests with JUnit, Mockito, or similar frameworks
Preferred Qualifications:
- Hands-on experience with Java-based CMS or content platforms and their extension APIs
- Experience with DAM or PIM solutions and integrations supporting content-as-a-service at scale
- Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud platforms for deploying JVM services
- Experience with caching and search technologies such as Redis, Memcached, Elasticsearch, or Solr
- Experience with event-driven architectures using Kafka or similar messaging systems
- Experience with modern JavaScript frameworks (React / Vue / Angular) for CMS authoring interfaces
- Hands-on experience using AI/ML tools and AI coding assistants to accelerate development, testing, and operational excellence
