Mapbox is the leading real-time location platform serving over 4 million registered developers globally. The Maps API team builds and maintains the applications and infrastructure responsible for creating and distributing Mapbox maps, handling billions of requests daily at global scale. As a Software Development Engineer III on the Maps API team, you will balance rapid development of new mapping tools with the reliability and scalability of services handling massive request volumes across diverse markets and use cases. You'll work on high-traffic read APIs and distributed ETL pipelines that power both internal and external customers, turning raw data into sophisticated map visualizations. Key responsibilities include: - Leading your engineering team to identify, scope, and execute well-defined technical tasks with accountability for on-time, quality delivery - Designing systems and making architectural decisions that support Mapbox's rapid customer growth - Mentoring peers through 1:1s, design reviews, and code reviews to foster professional growth and technical excellence - Promoting operational excellence through rigorous testing, monitoring, documentation, and on-call support - Reducing technical debt, optimizing application performance, and accelerating feature velocity - Fostering a culture of collaboration, transparency, and data-driven decision-making You'll tackle complex challenges including handling the world's edge cases in mapping (writing systems, fonts, local regulations, boundary disputes), scaling to unexpected traffic patterns, and integrating AI thoughtfully into engineering workflows. Required qualifications: 8-10+ years building scalable, high-volume, low-latency backend services. Proficiency in Python, Node.js, and native AWS (CDK, ECS, Step Functions, Lambda, S3, RDS, CloudWatch, CloudFront). Experience with mapping/geospatial products. Strong independent execution, communication, analytical approach, and commitment to code quality and mentorship. Nice-to-have: C++ proficiency.
