Orbital is an AI platform for real estate legal work, trusted by 5,000+ real estate professionals including UK Magic Circle and US Am Law 100 firms. The company has raised $75m to date, including a recent $60m Series B led by Brighton Park Capital. As a Senior UX Design Engineer, you will own complex product problems end-to-end, from customer discovery through shipping. You'll join a three-person design team and work alongside product managers, product engineers, legal engineers (former real estate lawyers), and AI engineers. Key responsibilities: - Conduct customer research to understand how real estate lawyers and property business teams work, mapping roles and workflows within law firms and property companies. - Design interactions with AI agents that perform real work on behalf of users: determining what users hand over to agents, how they verify outputs, trace reasoning, decide when to intervene, and how the interface evolves as AI capabilities improve. - Solve problems with rough, working prototypes tested with real users before refining for polish. - Build and ship interface changes yourself using AI coding tools in the codebase. Engineering depth is welcome but not required. - Maintain product coherence as engineers, legal engineers, product people, and AI agents all build interfaces. Document design decisions as reusable rules in the codebase and evolve the design system. The role emphasizes solving hard, unsolved problems rather than polishing screens. You'll work with demanding users who rely on the product for real deals and real buildings. The pace is fast, processes evolve continuously, and you'll spend most time on building and problem-solving rather than creating perfect mockups. Design engineering is a newer role type; strong designers with good product sense who are excited about building what they design are encouraged to apply, even without the exact title in their background. Requirements: - Demonstrated ownership and shipping of product design work; ability to walk through the problem, not just the result. - Comfort with ambiguity; ability to form a hypothesis, test with real users, and iterate based on feedback. - Strong design fundamentals: hierarchy, layout, typography, component states, navigation, and flow. - Experience designing for expert users in their domain; ability to use familiar patterns and avoid condescension. - Clear communication: make decisions and ship without waiting for sign-off, explain reasoning in reusable terms, and change direction for good reasons. - Genuine excitement about AI: understanding its capabilities, trajectory, and how to maximize value. Experience designing or building with AI tools (professional or personal projects). - Willingness to learn how property and legal work operates. No prior legal or property knowledge required. Desirable: - Experience designing AI products (showing reasoning, signaling confidence, enabling user steering of agents). - Background in legal tech, fintech, compliance, or similar fields where precision and accountability are paramount. - Side projects, hackathons, or personal builds. - Design systems and accessibility experience. - Early-stage or fast-scaling startup experience where you helped establish processes.
