Avallon AI builds AI agents that automate the full insurance claims lifecycle—from intake to settlement. The company has grown from zero to seven figures of ARR in twelve months and is now scaling 3X quarter-over-quarter, working with some of the largest insurance carriers in the world. The founding team includes builders from MIT, Harvard, and Cornell, backed by top investors.
You will be Avallon's first designer, owning every surface customers interact with daily. Currently, the product is a functional interface built by engineers. As the largest insurance companies in the country begin running real claims operations through the platform, you will transform it into a polished, purpose-built system that becomes the centerpiece of their workflow.
Your responsibilities include:
- Own all customer-facing surfaces: the claims workspace, review and exception flows, agent transparency (showing what the agent did, why, what it read, confidence levels), and executive reporting dashboards.
- Turn an agent platform into a system people work in all day. Your customers are replacing legacy software they've used for twenty years, so density, explicit state, and speed for frequent tasks are critical.
- Design the interaction model for human-AI collaboration. Users must understand agent actions, reasoning, sources, and uncertainty, then decide whether to approve or intervene. You'll shape this experience with users and engineers.
- Ship solutions end-to-end. Convert customer problems (surfaced by field deployment engineers or direct feedback) into clear workflows and drive them with engineering from discovery through delivery, owning usability and measuring outcomes.
- Instrument and measure friction. Own UX analytics, combine behavioral data with user research, and validate that changes reduce effort for users completing their work.
- Set the design bar and build the design system. As design grows, you'll establish principles and lead the function.
You will work in person in New York. High agency is essential—there is no design team to hide inside, and you'll need to sit with users, watch what confuses them, and iterate on the design rather than defend it.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years designing software with end-to-end ownership
- Portfolio depth in dense, technical software (e.g., tools operators use for six hours a day)
- Demonstrated ability to observe user confusion and change design instead of defending it
- High agency and comfort working without assigned tasks or a design team structure
- Based in NYC and excited to work in person
NICE TO HAVE:
- Exposure to insurance, claims, healthcare, or other compliance-heavy operational domains
- Experience designing AI products with opinions on citations, confidence, and human-in-the-loop flows
- Brand and visual identity work
- Early-stage startup experience, especially as the first hire in a function
