Apollo GraphQL is seeking a Senior Staff Product Designer to shape the future of developer experience for teams building on GraphQL APIs. You'll work on core developer tools used by engineers at companies like Walmart, Expedia, DoorDash, and The New York Times to build, test, and manage their APIs.
In this role, you'll assess Apollo's product surfaces end-to-end, identify where design effort creates the most leverage, and drive that work from conception through execution. You'll lead the modernization of core developer experiences, transforming powerful but disconnected features into coherent journeys. You'll partner with engineering as a peer, bringing your own point of view on what should be built and making the case for it.
You'll set design and craft standards that other builders—designers, PMs, and engineers—actually adopt, contributing patterns to the design system that accelerate delivery beyond your own team. You'll know when decisions need usability testing and when they don't. You'll tie design work to business metrics: developer activation, time-to-first-successful-API-call, or support costs tied to confusing flows.
Key responsibilities include identifying high-leverage problems independently, designing end-to-end solutions, operating with ambiguity to turn unclear problems into cohesive vision, and driving your own work by proactively surfacing problems and building alignment with engineering.
You'll have real range across product areas: core developer experience, onboarding for new developers, the design system, and interfaces for AI agents. This is not a role where someone hands you a spec—you'll form your own point of view on what's worth building and own it through to shipping.
