Cloudflare is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Security Rules team, working on microservices that power the company's Application Security Product Offering, including Rate Limiting and Web Application Firewall. You will design, implement, and maintain systems that operate at Cloudflare's scale, serving 25+ million Internet properties.
In this role, you will take ownership of complex technical problems and lead projects from design through production operation. You'll work primarily with Rust and Go, alongside technologies including Docker, PostgreSQL, Redis, Memcached, gRPC, Kafka, and Clickhouse. The team values reliability, fault tolerance, and systems that can scale globally.
Key responsibilities include designing and maintaining security-focused microservices, leading technical design and execution for complex projects, collaborating with security, network engineering, SRE, and product teams to solve difficult technical problems, and helping raise the technical bar through systemic improvements and reduced operational toil. You will mentor other engineers, provide thoughtful technical guidance, review peer work throughout the development lifecycle, and help shape the architecture and reliability of systems running at Cloudflare's scale.
You should have 6+ years of professional experience at technology companies, strong programming skills in systems-level languages (Rust, Go, C++), demonstrated ability to lead complex technical projects from ambiguity through delivery, and experience building and operating distributed systems. Experience with monitoring, alerting, debugging high-volume production systems, and working with databases is expected. The role requires mentoring capability, strong interpersonal skills, and comfort with on-call responsibilities outside standard working hours.
