Tutor Intelligence is building general-purpose, intelligent robots for deployment in factories, logistics, and eventually homes. The company designs, manufactures, deploys, and maintains its own hardware while running all operational software in-house.
This role owns the internal systems and shared data model that power Tutor's operations across manufacturing, deployment, maintenance, field service, and sales. Today these systems are fragmented across functions; you will consolidate and evolve them as the company scales.
You will be responsible for the relational schema that defines robots, sites, customers, parts, jobs, and people—the single source of truth for all internal tools. You'll own the software systems each operations function depends on daily: maintenance ticketing and service history, manufacturing work orders and serialized builds, tutoring and teleoperation queues, deployment records, and sales handoffs.
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing and safely migrating the shared data model as new functions are added
- Translating operational processes into software by working directly with technicians, plant managers, and field teams
- Ensuring operational data integrity across systems, replacing spreadsheets with reliable tooling
- Directing AI coding agents (Claude Code and similar) to build and maintain a large internal codebase, reviewing output critically and designing interfaces that make agents effective
- Providing same-day support when floor or field processes are blocked, and fixing underlying processes when tools are not the problem
- Building judgment about when to build vs. buy, and when processes need software vs. process change
The company builds its own tools rather than buying off-the-shelf solutions (custom PLM, customized MES). You'll spend time on manufacturing floors, on deployment calls, and with field teams because the systems you own are theirs to use. A significant portion of this role involves working with AI coding agents to scale internal tool development.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 6+ years building production software, including ownership of internal or operational systems that a business depends on day to day
- Demonstrated expertise in data modeling as a discipline: designing and evolving relational schemas that multiple teams depend on, and executing migrations (PostgreSQL preferred)
- Full-stack fluency: TypeScript and React on front end, Python or TypeScript services on back end, comfort working across layers
- Comfort with the people side of operations: ability to understand what technicians and plant managers do and translate that into fitting software
- Hands-on experience with AI coding agents (Claude Code or similar) for real engineering work, including directing agents through multi-step tasks and understanding their failure modes
- Sound judgment about build vs. buy decisions and when processes need software intervention
NICE TO HAVE:
- Manufacturing or field-service systems experience (MES, ERP, work orders, serialized inventory, maintenance management)
- Background at robotics or hardware companies where tracked entities are physical
- Data warehousing and analytics (dbt, ClickHouse, Metabase)
- gRPC and Protocol Buffers
- Experience as first or only engineer on internal tools at a growing company
