Salary: CAD 155,000 - 200,000 / annual
Stream is a Series B developer platform powering real-time Chat, Video, Activity Feeds, and AI Moderation for billions of end-users across thousands of apps including Strava, Bumble, eBay, and Patreon. The platform processes billions of API requests monthly and supports millions of concurrent users.
You will join a small, senior infrastructure team rebuilding the platform's foundation. Over the next year, the team is migrating from AWS to GCP, adopting Kubernetes, and relocating 35-40 Postgres shards from managed RDS to self-hosted infrastructure—all while maintaining service to billions of monthly API requests. You will own significant portions of this work outright.
Key responsibilities include: designing and operating infrastructure for real-time systems at massive scale; driving Kubernetes adoption end-to-end (cluster architecture, workload design, service migration); re-architecting workloads for cost and performance during the cloud migration; owning cloud cost optimization with measurable outcomes; writing production Go and Python for internal services, tooling, and automation; leading post-migration tuning and capacity planning; collaborating with backend, video, and moderation engineers on system design and reliability; and participating in on-call, incident response, and root cause analysis.
You should have 5+ years in infrastructure, platform, DevOps, or SRE engineering with clear depth in infrastructure over application development. You need production coding experience in Go or Python (scripting-only backgrounds are not a fit), Kubernetes at meaningful production scale with hands-on operations experience, and direct experience leading cloud cost or efficiency optimization on AWS or GCP with quantifiable outcomes. Strong cloud fundamentals across networking, compute, storage, and IAM are essential. You should be comfortable in a small team, leading projects and reviewing PRs in the same week, and already using AI tooling in your engineering workflow.
Bonus qualifications include experience with both AWS and GCP migrations, PostgreSQL at scale (sharding, replication, partitioning), real-time systems (WebSockets, WebRTC, streaming), the wider stack (CockroachDB, Redis, Terraform, Prometheus), API-first or infrastructure companies at scaleup stage, open source contributions, writing or talks on cloud/platform/distributed systems, formal FinOps practice, and developer-facing API or SDK product experience.
The role is based in Toronto with a 3-day hybrid arrangement. Stream is backed by Felicis Ventures, GGV Capital, 01 Advisors, Techstars, and Arthur Ventures, with notable angels including Dick Costolo (ex-CEO Twitter), Olivier Pomel (CEO Datadog), Tom Preston-Werner (GitHub co-founder), and Nicolas Dessaigne (Algolia co-founder). The company has ~145 people across 35+ countries with offices in Boulder, CO and Amsterdam, NL.
