Snowflake is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to work on FoundationDB (FDB), an open-source, highly scalable distributed database that powers Snowflake's core metadata architecture and enables ACID transactions at high frequency and low latency. FoundationDB currently performs millions of transactions per second across thousands of processes and is a critical component of Snowflake's Data Cloud platform.
In this role, you will own end-to-end delivery of strategically important projects, from problem identification through design, implementation, testing, and production rollout. You will design and implement critical high-performance systems to handle the ever-growing request rate of the database, build next-generation transaction systems, caching layers, storage engines, and multi-tenant capabilities. You will analyze and understand performance and scalability bottlenecks, instrument relevant components, and implement solutions. Additionally, you will evangelize best practices in database usage and end-to-end architecture.
Snowflake is scaling FoundationDB by at least one order of magnitude over the next few years to meet emerging workloads that require the system's reliability, high availability, and strong consistency semantics. This will require innovation to re-architect core components of the system.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 6+ years of hands-on software engineering experience
- Systems programming skills including multi-threading and concurrency; fluency in C++, C, or Java preferred
- Experience designing, building, and operating large-scale distributed systems or web services
- Experience with scalable key-value stores (FoundationDB, RocksDB/LevelDB, DynamoDB, Redis, etc.) is a plus
- Strong CS fundamentals including data structures, algorithms, and distributed systems
- Track record of delivering highly complex projects in the distributed systems space
- Intense curiosity, willingness to question, and passion for making systems better
- Strong technical problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills
- BS in Computer Science; Master's or PhD preferred
