Zoox is building a purpose-built autonomous robotaxi, and every line of autonomous driving software must be compiled, tested, and validated reliably at scale before deployment. You will join the team owning the build infrastructure that makes this possible: maintaining and evolving a Bazel-based build system in a large, multi-language monorepo used by hundreds of engineers.
As a Senior Software Engineer on the CI team, you will take ownership of the build ecosystem supporting rapidly expanding, safety-critical autonomous vehicle software. This is a hands-on role where you will configure and upgrade compilers, profile and optimize build pipelines, and serve as the primary expert for build-related inquiries across the organization. While Zoox has established a robust foundation using Bazel in a monorepo with a remote build farm and cache, the goal is to elevate this into a world-class development experience.
Key responsibilities:
- Own CI performance, cost efficiency, and reliability end-to-end, managing thousands of builds per day and scaling
- Rethink CI failure analysis, triage, developer support, and incident response using modern AI tools to shift first-line work off human on-call
- Work cross-functionally to identify integration bottlenecks and fix them at the platform level, enabling teams to make their CI efficient and reliable
- Set the technical bar for how CI is built and operated, and mentor engineers around you
You will be empowering developers through metrics and advanced tooling in a fast-paced, execution-oriented culture focused on safety-critical systems.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of software engineering and programming experience, including significant experience in platform, infrastructure, or developer tooling
- Hands-on experience operating a distributed CI system at scale (Buildkite preferred; Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or similar)
- Working familiarity with a modern build system such as Bazel, and understanding of how caching and remote execution interact with CI
- Solid knowledge of version control systems such as Git
- Self-driven and motivated with strong work ethic and passion for problem solving
BONUS QUALIFICATIONS:
- Cloud compute cost analysis and fleet economics (AWS EC2 instance families, spot, right-sizing)
- Experience with operational challenges of large monorepos and merge queues
- Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform, Helm, and Ansible; good knowledge of Kubernetes and containers
