TRM Labs is seeking a Senior Software Engineer for Backend to join the Product Engineering team in San Francisco. The role focuses on building reliable, scalable backend systems and APIs that power TRM's AI-driven intelligence platform used by public and private sector agencies to investigate and disrupt financial crime.
You will work on complex engineering problems spanning technical architecture, project management, and cross-functional collaboration. Key responsibilities include developing and maintaining public APIs as part of the API Product suite, designing scalable systems and web services (primarily Node.js, though language flexibility is valued), and collaborating with stakeholders to translate functional vision into technical roadmaps with measurable outcomes.
The role emphasizes supporting internal business units through shared engineering services, understanding customer pain points, and bridging those needs to technical and product requirements. You'll develop cross-functional relationships across the organization and participate in an on-call rotation for internal tools support.
Required qualifications include demonstrated experience designing and building scalable systems, web applications, APIs, and services; understanding of storage systems (relational databases like Postgres and analytical databases); ability to understand customer needs and translate them into technical requirements; high initiative and ownership with comfort navigating ambiguity; strong problem-structuring and prioritization skills; and excellent communication abilities for both technical and non-technical audiences.
The Product Engineering team operates on weekly sprints with a culture emphasizing psychological safety, trust-based relationships, accountability, and collaboration. The team spans EST and PST timezones with at least 6 hours of daily overlap (8 am–2 pm PST). TRM's engineering culture prioritizes ruthless prioritization, rapid adaptation to new information, challenging timelines with ownership of delivery speed, and time-boxed spiking for de-risking decisions early.
This is an in-office role requiring at least three days per week on-site in San Francisco to support in-person collaboration and team engagement.
