Affirm is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Consumer Authentication Platform team, responsible for building secure, reliable, and seamless authentication experiences that serve millions of consumers across thousands of merchants and multiple countries.
You will own the technical design and delivery of significant authentication platform capabilities, leading projects from requirements and architecture through implementation, rollout, and ongoing operation. Key responsibilities include:
- Design and build secure, highly available systems supporting consumer sign-in, authentication factors, account recovery, step-up authentication, session management, authorization, and identity federation.
- Lead significant technical initiatives and influence the architecture and evolution of the platform.
- Collaborate with Product, Security, Fraud, Compliance, Design, Analytics, and cross-functional engineering teams to translate security, regulatory, fraud, and customer-experience requirements into pragmatic technical designs.
- Proactively identify and lead resolution of project, process, technology, security, reliability, or business issues.
- Support operations and availability through metrics creation, monitoring, escalation, and on-call participation.
- Foster a culture of quality and security by setting and improving code review and design standards.
- Develop talent on your team through feedback, mentorship, and hands-on collaboration.
- Clearly communicate technical decisions, constraints, risks, and trade-offs to engineering and non-engineering audiences.
- Lead investigation and resolution of complex production issues and identify systemic improvements.
Authentication is the front door to Affirm's platform, powering critical consumer journeys including sign-up, sign-in, account recovery, and checkout authentication. You will build foundational capabilities such as authentication factors, identity federation, session and authorization services, and risk-based authentication that protect consumers while minimizing friction.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 4+ years of experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using Python, Kotlin, Java, or comparable modern programming language.
- Track record developing highly available distributed systems using AWS, MySQL, Kubernetes, relational databases, event-driven architectures, and RPC or API frameworks.
- Experience defining technical plans for significant features or system components with elegant, secure, simple, and extensible designs; ability to write high-quality code easily understood and used by others.
- Proficiency making significant changes in large codebases with developed tools and practices for safe changes, including testing strategies, migration plans, and controlled rollouts.
- Demonstrated ownership of growth, proactive feedback-seeking, and mentorship of other engineers.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills supporting effective collaboration with global engineering teams and cross-functional partners.
- Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent practical experience.
- Familiarity with OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, WebAuthn/passkeys, FIDO2, JWTs, and public-key cryptography.
- Knowledge of security and assurance frameworks such as NIST Digital Identity Guidelines or PCI DSS.
- Experience designing session-management, token-issuance, account-recovery, or multi-factor authentication systems.
- Familiarity with risk-based or adaptive authentication and interaction between identity, security, compliance, and fraud controls.
