Voltera is a rapidly scaling and profitable Canadian tech company in the additive electronics industry since 2013, serving customers across 92 countries. The company develops hardware products including the V-One PCB printer (which integrates drilling, printing conductive materials, solder paste dispensing, and reflowing) and the NOVA materials dispensing system for flexible hybrid electronics prototyping.
In this Senior Software Developer role, you will own the development and maintenance of Python-based system services, daemons, and tools running on Linux devices that power Voltera's hardware products. You will be responsible for delivering well-defined features and services, breaking requirements into implementation tasks, and identifying dependencies. Key responsibilities include:
- Develop and maintain Python-based system services, daemons, and tools on Linux
- Build RESTful APIs and WebSocket interfaces exposing machine state, diagnostics, and control to frontend clients
- Implement device communication and error handling in collaboration with hardware and firmware teams
- Develop reliable service behavior including startup, shutdown, reconnection, logging, and fault recovery
- Collaborate with React developers to align API behavior, system state, and user workflows
- Improve CI/CD pipelines and development tools
- Maintain clear documentation for APIs, services, communication interfaces, and debugging procedures
- Expand beyond your comfort zone in the stack and help where needed
You will work from the Waterloo office at least three days per week in a mission-driven, tight-knit team environment. The company emphasizes that you are hired to have a voice and make real impact, not to be a cog in the machine.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Post-secondary education in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related field, or equivalent practical experience
- Solid experience developing and debugging in Linux environments (services, permissions, processes, command-line tools)
- Experience designing and consuming REST APIs, JSON interfaces, and inter-process communication
- Familiarity with networking concepts (sockets, HTTP, WebSockets, timeouts, connection management)
- Ability to independently deliver defined work, communicate tradeoffs, and seek input when requirements or technical risks are unclear
- Strong collaboration and documentation skills across hardware, firmware, and frontend teams
NICE TO HAVES:
- Computer vision, image processing, camera calibration, or sensor fusion experience
- Software development and deployment on System-on-Module (SoM) platforms
- Firmware development (C/C++, microcontrollers, embedded debugging)
- Hardware communication experience (USB, serial, CAN, I²C, SPI, GPIO)
- Embedded Linux build systems (Yocto, Buildroot)
- React, TypeScript, and frontend integration exposure
- Docker and container-based deployment
- Real-time data streaming, telemetry, and diagnostics
- Robotics, motion systems, automation, or physical products experience or interest
