Freenome is seeking a Senior Research Associate to join the Genomic Early Development team, contributing to the development of next-generation sequencing (NGS) based assay technologies for early cancer detection. This role bridges research and operations, requiring hands-on expertise in molecular biology, genomics, and automated workflow optimization.
Key responsibilities include designing and executing experiments to develop, optimize, and characterize NGS workflows covering DNA/RNA extraction, library preparation, target capture, and sequencing. You will operate and maintain NGS instruments including automated liquid handlers, PCR instruments, and sequencers. The role involves conducting reagent testing, developing quality control methods, and troubleshooting analytical workflows to drive process improvements.
Collaboration is central: you will work with Scientists, Automation Engineers, and Computational Biologists to transfer research prototypes from development stages, and partner with Quality Control, Manufacturing, Quality, and Regulatory teams to transition methods into Operations. You will maintain rigorous documentation through electronic lab notebooks, author work instructions and protocols, and ensure compliance with cGLP and cGDP standards.
The ideal candidate holds a Bachelor's degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, or related field with 4+ years of life sciences experience, or a Master's degree in a related discipline. You must have hands-on NGS assay development experience, strong experimental design and execution skills, meticulous attention to detail, and excellent manual pipetting proficiency. Clear communication and cross-functional collaboration skills are essential. This is an onsite role based at Freenome's Brisbane, California headquarters, reporting to the Senior Manager of Genomic Early Development.
